What Should Your Child Eat?
Mothers often face the problem of wondering if they give their child the right kind of nutrition. As a toddler grows from preschool to playschool, it is essential that they get the right nutrients. Every age has their own diets, based on the requirement and growth of their body. Most mothers are working women where a majority of their time is spent at the office. But this does not imply that they are incapable of taking care of the nutrition requirements of their child. As these toddlers are sent to preschool, mothers are still concerned if their kids receive enough nutrition from the food they eat.
The overall diet of an adult and child is largely similar, it is only the quantity that differs. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat are the basic nutrients required in a body. For a pre-schooler here are a few basic guidelines that you can keep track of. Ensure to follow them as much as possible when you pack your kid’s lunchbox.
Grains- Include more whole grains into the diet of your child. Items like whole wheat bread, quinoa, oatmeal and brown rice are great. Try avoiding pasta, bread or products that are from refined grains.
Proteins- Choose lean meat, poultry, soy products and seafood. Add beans, peas and unsalted nuts or seeds to the diet.
Fruits- Include lots of fresh fruits or dry fruits in the diet of your child. It is always better to have cut fruits than juice. If you are giving fruit juice, ensure its 100 percent pure and not the packaged ones in the market. In case of dry fruits always remember one-quarter cup of dry fruit/juice is equal to one cup of fresh fruit/juice. Do not use sugar in the juices.
Vegetables- Add a lot of vegetables to the diet. Add dark leafy greens, orange, red and all the colours of vegetables available in the market. Always try to use the fresh ones rather than the canned version. If you want additional care, try to choose low sodium options or vegetables that have low sodium content.
Dairy- Give your child milk twice a day. If he is allergic try using alternatives such as soy milk or almond milk. Try taking in low-fat milk. If your child is capable of chewing, add cheese and yoghurt to the diet. Remember these few food guidelines for your pre-schooler and he will do fine.
